Can I Attend LARPs Near Washington, D.C?
As mentioned, yes you can absolutely attend LARPs in and near Washington D.C. However, these events are very tightly secured and there are many, many rules, particularly those events near government buildings.
In general, you can attend LARP events wherever you want to travel, as long as you register and play by the rules! You are really only limited by your availability and interest.
You don’t have to be afraid of being the only person from outside of a given area attending – LARPing organizations are always looking for new people to join in and change up the story. They also attract people from small towns, big cities, college campuses, and from surrounding states.
Before going to a new event, you want to look online and find any rules and regulations that you can about the event, just to be sure you know going into the event what you can and cannot do. You don’t want your first impression to be a bad one.
Some research will save you trouble once you get to the site, and it can also help you to plan your trip better. If you are traveling from Washington, D.C., to go to a LARP that is a few hours away from your home, you may need to figure out where you will sleep, what you will eat, and where you can store your things. Oftentimes, it is onsite, but not always. Finding out what people recommend, understanding the site of the event, and maybe even making a friend or two can help to prepare you for your experience.

Before going to any LARP events in Washington, D.C., or the surrounding areas, you should learn about the world of the event – some organizations will play with similar worlds, but there are different rules, characters, events, and happenstances. The more you know and the better prepared you are, the more fun you will have.
For example, at Alliance LARP Gettysburg, we work within the World of Barran and all of its different planes. At the very least, you should have a working knowledge of the world. If you don’t, we can catch you up to speed, but it can take a few hours before you really catch on to everything.
