There’s a lot going on in Harrisburg, including some pretty great events that everyone loves to attend – but it can be difficult to find any live-action role-play events in Harrisburg. There are a few little groups here and there, but you will likely have to travel to get to any larger events.
There are many reasons for this, including a lack of space, expenses, and safety. At Alliance Gettysburg, we hold events that are easily drivable for people in and around Harrisburg. Most of our events take place in Hamburg, PA, which is a fairly central location for people from all over the state.
What Is LARPing?
If you are new to LARPing, it can all seem a little overwhelming, but it isn’t! At the end of the day, it is a bunch of friends getting together to create their own worlds and characters using their imaginations and creativity.
During a LARP, you will take on the appearance of a character that you create. You will be able to build their costumes, personality, achievements, and more. The more people that attend a LARP, the better it will be for everyone involved because it adds depth and dimension to the game.
Can I Attend Any LARP Near Harrisburg?
Every LARP that you attend is going to be different, have a unique storyline, and require something different – but that doesn’t mean that you can’t go to any LARP that you want. As long as you read the rulebook, familiarize yourself with the different rules and regulations of that specific organization, and come with an open mind, you will have a great time.
Before going to a LARP, you want to find out some information about the site, learn more about the storyline, and maybe even talk to people on social media. Most LARP events will have an active community on either Facebook or on Discord.
How To Get The Best Experience LARPing In Harrisburg
Harrisburg itself is quite diverse, as is the rest of Pennsylvania. It is a true melting pot of people, ideas, and dedication levels – even when it comes to LARPing. Remember that people who attend live-action roleplay events tend to be extremely nice, welcoming, and open – at least in our experiences.
Before you go to an event, you want to prepare yourself physically and mentally. Ensure that you know about the world for that specific event, you’ve prepared for the location, and you have packed appropriately. If you are from Harrisburg, you know that Pennsylvania weather can vary pretty widely.
Be sure to check the weather forecast before you go to the event, check what you are allowed to bring and aren’t allowed to bring, ensure you have adequate hydration and nourishment, and you have talked to some of the organizers or veteran attendees.
Finally, to get the best experience at a LARP event, you want to have a fully fleshed-out character. This means that you have developed the character, designed a costume (be sure to read the rules for what is allowed and what isn’t), and you’ve determined a standing within the society.
